Location and History

 

With 193km² of biodiversity, beautiful scenery and a rich coastline, Ilha Grande is located in the municipality of Angra dos Reis, being part of the coastal region popularly known as Costa Verde.

Very close to the cities of Paraty and Mangaratiba, Ilha Grande is recognized worldwide as one of the main and most exuberant natural and tourist strongholds in the Atlantic Forest.

Get ready to start an unconditional love relationship with the largest island in the State of Rio de Janeiro and the sixth largest maritime island in Brazil. There are more than 100 beaches throughout the island's territory, as well as many stories and natural features that you will keep in your memory forever. Believe me, it will be worth living this love.

How to get here

Access to the Island is made only by boat, from 3 points:

 

1 ) MARINA DE PORTOGALO: private transfer in our boat (Real 25", capacity for up to 8 people + bags), at scheduled times.

2) CONCEIÇÃO DE JACAREÍ: has closed and paid parking options. For the crossing, you can choose: Private Taxi Boat - Large boats that make the crossing directly from Conceição to Abraãozinho  (O Sítio). The boat is exclusive to your group and you can arrange any time you wish with the boatman. Duration: Approx. 20 minutes
Flex Boat -  Collective boat with approximately 50 people and scheduled times - regular line. Take you to Abraão and we'll pick you up in our boat, taking you to THE SITE. Duration: Approx. 20 minutes

3) ANGRA DOS REIS: closest option for those coming from São Paulo. Flex Boat and Taxi Boat also depart from Angra. Duration of the crossing: from 30 to 40 minutes.

CURIOSITIES.

  • BARRIL ÂNCORA

    Have you ever heard of the ANCHOR BARRIL? It is located on Lopes Mendes beach, one of the most beautiful and visited on the island. They say he has been in the region for at least 300 years. It is still a mystery how he arrived in Lopes Mendes.

  • SINCE 1502

    Discovered in 1502, the Island was once a hideout for adventurers and PIRATES. They hid in the forest looking for water, wood and food. On beaches like Aventureiro, Lopes Mendes and Provetá there are also marks of Indians, other inhabitants of Ilha Grande, centuries ago.

  • THE PRISION

    The Ilha Grande prison, which has been deactivated since 1994, had as a backdrop some political prisons, such as that of the author GRACILIANO RAMOS. There he wrote “Memories of Jail”. Today, the site houses a study center at the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ).
